Travelling with Jesus #4 – A BEACH

Ed and Jam are travelling with Jesus to the beach! More fun facts fight off, cries of ‘I want more’ and wondering what would happen if Blackpool were taken over by sinister donkeys. We’re in Matthew 13:14-21 when, spoilers, Jesus feeds 5000 men and their families until the crowd couldn’t eat any more.

Planning when to do this

Hopefully you’ve getting into the swing of things now. For more thoughts on how and when to use these ideas, see the intro from a few week’s ago.

CRAFT IDEAS

There are six ideas below, three for over 5s and three for under 5s. Feel free to use any that you think will serve you well.

Use the crafts and colouring sheets while you listen to the podcast (make sure you’ve got the materials you need first!). And use them to reinforce the teaching ideas.

The printable sheet for over 5s this week is here.

For under 5s the first two ideas can be found on this printable sheet and the Free Bible Image’s PowerPoint is here and the story to go with the pictures is here.

All the instructions below are also included on the sheet – if you’d prefer just to hit print and then stop looking at the screen, go ahead!

Here are Ed’s discussion questions:

Try all the questions if you can, they get harder as you go!

Under 5s

What did Jesus give the people that made them say we have enough?

5-7s

If you had asked the crowd that day, what is Jesus like, what do you think they would have said?

8-11s

Does Jesus always give you what you want and why or why not?

Teenagers

What is the thing you ache for, how do you think Jesus could help with that ache?

Idea 1 – Is Jesus Enough

Thousands of people had come to hear Jesus teach. Now it was late and there was nowhere for people to buy food and everyone was getting hungry.

A boy came up and offered to share his packed lunch – it was just 2 fish and 5 little bread rolls……

Do you think that was enough to feed thousands and thousands of hungry people?

Do you think the boy understood who Jesus was…..?

Jesus took the 5 loaves of bread and the 2 fish and thanked God for them, then began to hand the food to His disciples to share out amongst the crowds.

Read or listen again to Matthew 14:14-21

What happened?
Did all the people get fed, or just some of them?
Did some get lots to eat, but some just had to make do with a little bit? Who had more than enough?
How many baskets of left-overs were collected up afterwards?
Do you think Jesus is able to do more than enough?

Maybe you have things in your life that seem hard to deal with or to find an answer for. Spend some time together sharing and talking to Jesus, asking Him to help and guide you through these things.

Jesus is more than enough. There is nothing that is too big or too small for Him to help and guide us with.

Print pages 2 and 3 of the printable sheet.

Carefully colour and cut out the loaves and fishes on page 2.

Memory Verse – can you can put the loaves and fishes in the right order to make the memory verse – Matthew 19:26.

Follow the instructions on page 3 to make the basket to put your loaves and fishes in.

Idea 2 – Puzzle

Print Page 4 of the printable sheet.

Idea 3 – Colouring

Print page 5 of the printable sheet.

Idea 1 for under 5s – Activity

Print and cut out the loaves and fish on pages 2 and 3 of the printable sheet. How many pieces can you tear it into? Would it be enough for 5000 people?!

Idea 2 for under 5s – Video

Idea 3 for under 5s – Story

Print the Free Bible Images pictures from this printable PowerPoint (or display on a device to save ink!) and read through the story that accompanies the pictures from this printable sheet.
